Employee-generated content (EGC)

The brand trains and incentivises employees to make TikTok / Reels / LinkedIn content as themselves about working at the brand or about the product, posting on the brand handle or their own.

How it works

Brand runs a content-training programme for staff. Provides bonuses (£50-£500 per post), guidelines, and equipment. Employees film themselves at work. Kitchen prep, store walkthroughs, product builds, day-in-the-life. Posted on brand handle and / or personal handles. Often 'the team' becomes part of brand identity.

When to use it

Employee voices feel less polished than influencer voices, which the algorithm now favours. Use when brand culture is content-friendly and staff are willing. Outsized lift for retail, hospitality, restaurants, and software with personality-led culture.

Business-type fit

The same play works differently depending on the business. Here is what it looks like in each one, and what it gets you.

Business typeHow it's implementedWhat it gets you
DTCWarehouse / packing / customer-service team posts; meet-the-team content.Humanises brand; doubles as recruiting content; differentiates from competitors with sterile feeds.
HospitalityFront-of-house and back-of-house staff post regularly from the venue's handle and theirs.Foot-traffic-driving native content; one of the highest-performing creative formats for hospitality.
SaaS / B2BEngineers and PMs post on LinkedIn / X about how the product is built. Founder may lead but team participates.Recruiting halo; trust-led demand generation.
AppsEng / design team builds in public; PM team posts feature demos. Less common but effective for AI / dev tools.Builder-credibility lift; signals product velocity to users and investors.
CPGLess common at scale. Manufacturing facility / lab content for science-led brands.Differentiator for premium / category-leader positioning.

How it shows up in the data

This is what the play leaves behind on the platforms. These are the signals we use to detect it.

The brand's own feed features the same employee faces repeatedly across months, not influencer rotation. Captions in first person ('my shift today', 'team mate of the week', 'POV: I work at…'). Tagged users / Collaborators sometimes list employee personal handles. Bonus: niche creator accounts whose bios contain the brand name often work at the venue.

EGC is hard to outsource and harder to copy than other strategies, making it a particularly defensible content engine.
