Always-on creator retainers
A creator is paid a monthly fee to publish a fixed number of posts about the brand on the creator's own audience, every month, for 6-12+ months.
How it works
Brand signs 5-30 creators to contracts specifying monthly post commitments (typically 2-4 in-feed posts + a handful of Stories), usage rights, and exclusivity within category. The creator posts on their own handles; the brand pays a flat monthly retainer regardless of view count. Spark Ad whitelisting (Strategy 06) is commonly bundled in.
When to use it
One-off sponsored posts produce one-off spikes; retainer posts compound audience trust and platform signal across months. Platforms now penalise sponsored-content-as-novelty and reward sponsored content that looks embedded in the creator's regular rhythm. Use when the brand has the budget for 6+ month commitments and wants category leadership through sustained creator presence, not novelty.
Business-type fit
The same play works differently depending on the business. Here is what it looks like in each one, and what it gets you.
| Business type | How it's implemented | What it gets you |
|---|---|---|
| DTC | 5-15 mid-tier creators (10k-200k followers), 2-4 posts per month each, on monthly retainers of £1k-£8k per creator. | Category-leadership signal; compounding brand familiarity in target audience; first-pick on creators competitors might otherwise sign. |
| Hospitality | 3-8 local creators (food, lifestyle, parenting) on £300-£1,500 / month retainers; each visits and posts about the venue twice a month. | Predictable foot traffic; saturation in local feeds across seasons; competitors can't sign the same creators. |
| SaaS / B2B | 3-6 operator-creators on £1k-£10k / month for 1-2 posts about the product per month on LinkedIn / X / YouTube. | Authority signal in target persona's feed; demo pipeline that doesn't dry up between campaigns; warm leads versus cold ads. |
| Apps | 10-30 mid-tier creators each posting 3-8 brand-tagged TikToks per month, plus Story arcs. Often paired with Strategy 05. | Persistent algorithmic presence on FYP; install volume that holds between paid campaigns. |
| CPG | 10-20 creators in target verticals (cooking, mums, fitness) on annual retainers around relevant occasions. | Year-round category-leader presence; retailers see consistent demand drivers, unlocking shelf and feature support. |
How it shows up in the data
This is what the play leaves behind on the platforms. These are the signals we use to detect it.
High average posts per creator on the brand. The SAME creator handles appear multiple times in tagged-post tables for the same brand across a 30-90+ day window. Tagged posts from those repeat creators frequently carry partnership signals in captions: 'partnered with', 'ambassador', 'in collaboration with'.
A brand can run retainers below the top-100 view threshold and not appear in the named top-rankings at all. The brand-level ratio of posts to unique creators is the source of truth.
