Definitions and worked examples
Engagement rate: likes plus comments on a post, divided by its views, as a percentage Example: The median creator post by an Instagram account with 10k to 100k followers in this category came to 0.33% across 568 posts.
Views per follower: creator views on the brand's posts, divided by the summed followers of the creators who tagged it Example: Legion drew 13,697,297 creator views; divided by the followers of the creators who tagged it, that is 2.01 views per follower.
Top 10% threshold: the view count that 90% of posts in the tier fall below Example: For Instagram creators with 10k to 100k followers here, a post above 27,334 views is in the top 10%; above 455,276 it is in the top 1%.
Against the median: a group's median views divided by the median views of all 400 analysed posts (30,258) Example: Talking head videos had a median of 102,351 views, which is 3.38 times the median analysed post.
What this data cannot tell you
No fees, sales or attribution
We see what was posted and how it performed. We do not see what a creator was paid, whether a post drove sales, or which post a buyer saw first. Views per follower and engagement per post are the honest proxies and are named as proxies throughout.
One window, not a trend
Everything here was measured between 29 December 2025 and 28 June 2026. A brand that launched in July is not in it, and a number can move by the next edition.
Instagram images carry no view count
Instagram does not report views on images and carousels, so view-based figures stand on video posts. Engagement figures cover every post.
Strategy detection is inference
The strategies section reads posting patterns, captions and ads for the signs of a named strategy. It is a strong signal, not a contract we have seen.
Categories are judgement calls
Which brands belong in this category, and which sub-category each sits in, is a decision we made and can revise.
Ten brands take most of the attention, and 15 brands get none
The ten most-tagged protein coffee and shake brands took 71.7% of all creator views across 97 brands between 29 December 2025 and 28 June 2026, and the top brand alone took 16.3%.
82 of the 97 brands (84.5%) had at least one creator post tagging them in the window; 15 brands (15.5%) had none. The median active brand had 17 creator posts. 33 brands (34.0%) worked with 20 or more unique creators.
Instagram carried 76.7% of the creator posts and 73.7% of the creator views; TikTok carried 23.3% of the posts and 26.3% of the views. The category is an Instagram category first, with TikTok punching slightly above its post count on views.
Nearly half of all creator posts, 47.9%, came from accounts with 1k to 5k followers, and 10.9% from accounts with over 50k. The category runs on very small creators in volume.
54 brands (55.7%) were running Meta ads at the end of the window and 41 of them had at least one ad older than 30 days; the median advertiser had 25 live ads.
What to do with itAttention is concentrated at the top and spread thin below it, so a new brand should expect to build from small creators in numbers rather than one big name.

The league table: every brand ranked by creator views
Legion was the most-tagged protein coffee and shake brand, with 151 creator posts and 13,697,297 creator views between 29 December 2025 and 28 June 2026.
Alani Nu had by far the most creator posts, 500 from 330 unique creators, and finished second on views with 12,550,615. Garden of Life reached rank 3 on four posts, because one of them drew 7,008,662 views on its own.
The table ranks on creator views because views are what the whole category is competing for. On Instagram, protein coffee and shake creators with under 10k followers earned a 0.86% median engagement rate across 486 posts, against 0.2% for creators with 100k to 500k followers across 227 posts (29 December 2025 to 28 June 2026).
Views run the other way. The median Instagram post by a creator under 10k followers reached 1,185 views; by a creator with 10k to 100k followers, 5,351; by one with 100k to 500k, 23,941; by one with 500k to 1M, 94,947. A brand trades reach for engagement as it moves up the tiers.
TikTok views in this category are low outside the top posts. The median TikTok post by a creator with 10k to 100k followers reached 1,975 views and the top 10% passed 20,399, against 27,334 for the same tier on Instagram. The TikTok engagement edge for small accounts, 2.05% against 0.12%, is real, but it sits on small view counts.
The top 1% on Instagram starts at 29,125 views for creators under 10k followers, 455,276 for 10k to 100k, and 786,140 for 100k to 500k. Those are the posts worth copying, and the thresholds a brand should set as its scale trigger.
What to do with itSet the target per tier before briefing: a micro creator's post that passes 27,334 views on Instagram is a top 10% result here, and one that passes 455,276 is a top 1% result worth repeating.

Recipe: say let's make it, then mix the drink on camera
The creator says "let's make" the drink in the first second and then makes it, pour by pour, in a car park, a kitchen or a gas station. It fits this category because the product is an ingredient here: the drink people want to copy is a dirty soda, a protein mojito or an iced latte built on the can or the creamer. The four videos below are all a promise then a pour, and the smallest account in the group is the one that travelled furthest.
A kitchen counter, a car, or a fountain drink station; phone propped or held by a friend; natural light
0 to 3s: the creator says "let's make" the drink and shows the can or tub
3 to 8s: the first pour over ice, close on the cup
8 to 18s: the second ingredient and the stir; the colour change is the moment
last 3s: the first sip and a one-line verdict, cup to camera
Call to action:Ask the viewer which flavour to make next; put the recipe in the caption

POV skit: the order arrives, the drink is the punchline
A mid-size creator plays a small scene, a cafe order, an outfit check before errands, a morning with me, and the protein drink or bar is the prop that lands the joke or the moment. It fits this category because the product is carried everywhere and a scene needs a reason for it to be in shot. The four examples below are all played straight, and the one with a gluten-free complaint in the first line did the best.
A cafe, a car, a hallway by the front door; one actor, sometimes a second pair of hands; no voiceover needed
0 to 3s: the scene is set in one line of text on screen or one spoken line
3 to 8s: the product enters as the prop, not the subject
8 to 15s: the beat that makes the joke or the point
last 3s: the sip, the bite, or the exit, held for a second
Call to action:Ask "who else does this?" in the caption; keep the brand tag in the first comment

Talking head: the health reason first, the product second
A micro creator talks to camera and opens with the reason, a diagnosis, a parent's worry, a professional's habit, before the product appears. It fits this category because most shoppers here are buying for a reason (protein target, energy, a condition) and a face saying the reason out loud is the fastest way to earn the recommendation. The examples below are three creators between 10k and 90k followers who each led with the reason, and all three beat the typical post for their size several times over.
One chair, one lamp, phone at eye level; kitchen, gym or car; no music under the voice
0 to 3s: the reason, said plainly, face in frame
3 to 8s: the product comes into shot while the reason continues
8 to 18s: two concrete points, no lists longer than that
last 3s: a sip or a bite and the recommendation in one line

Bold claim: the protein number in the first line
A mid-size creator opens with a number, 28 grams a serving, 80 grams in the batch, a weight-loss number, and then shows the food or the day that backs it. It fits this category because the number is the product's whole promise and shoppers compare on it. The four examples below all lead with the claim, and the cookie dough with the grams in the first line is the biggest post in the group.
A kitchen with the label in reach; overhead for the mixing, face for the claim
0 to 3s: the number, spoken and on screen
3 to 8s: the product and the label, close enough to read
8 to 18s: the making or the eating that proves the number
last 3s: the number again with the finished thing in frame

Day in the life: the shake inside a full day of eating
A mid-size creator films a real day, a morning, a shift, a fasting day, and the drink appears where it actually sits in the day rather than as the point of the video. It fits this category because these products are habits, and a day shows the habit better than a review can. This is the thickest group in the dataset: 24 posts from 22 creators, and the four below all open with a time or a feeling, not the product.
Wherever the day happens; phone on a stand for the kitchen shots, handheld for the rest; captions in the creator's voice
0 to 3s: a time on screen or a line about the day, never the product
3 to 8s: the first scene of the day; the drink appears in the second scene
8 to 25s: three to five scenes with the product in one or two of them
last 3s: the day ends; the empty cup or the wrapper is the sign-off

6Day In The LifeAudience Callout100k to 500k followers · Instagram
Audience callout: name the person this drink is for
A mid-size creator opens by naming who the video is for, backpackers, beverage girls, triplet mums, people prioritising protein on a Friday night, and then shows the product in that life. It fits this category because the audience is split into small tribes and a callout stops the right one. The examples below name the person in the first line, and the two that did best were a packing list and a Friday cocktail.
The place the named person lives their day: trail, kitchen, desk, bar cart; face first, then product
0 to 3s: the callout, spoken to camera or as the on-screen line
3 to 8s: the product in the named person's setting
8 to 18s: the use, in real time, no montage
last 3s: the line again as a sign-off with the product in hand
Call to action:Ask the named group to tag a friend who is one of them

Patterns that looked good but stand on too few posts
POV skits by creators over 1M followers looked strong on six posts, but two are one creator and no brand briefs that tier.
Taste tests by mid-size creators looked strong on five posts, but the biggest is a laptop review tagged to a brand with the same name.
Recipes with a curiosity hook on TikTok: all five posts are one creator's series and none has stable media.
Before-and-after day-in-the-life videos on TikTok stand on nine posts, most from one creator's weight-loss series.
Recipes with a bold claim: seven of the twelve posts are one creator's ice-cream series, and the recipe pattern already covers it.
Product-in-action posts by mid-size creators: the biggest post in the group is about a different product, and the rest are thin.

The dirty soda made at a gas station
Alani Nu is named in 328 of 2,140 wide-pool captions; the best of them are poured at Buc-ee's or a fountain station.
Costco and Target restock hauls
Costco appears in 43 captions and Target in 82; restocks put the product in a trolley, not a studio.
What I eat in a day, at a number
45 captions are a full day of eating and 43 carry a weight number; the number is the hook.
Protein pancakes and overnight oats
33 pancake captions and 15 overnight-oats captions use the powder as an ingredient, not a drink.
Mushroom coffee and matcha swaps
36 mushroom and 34 matcha captions: the swap-from-coffee story is a whole sub-audience.

06 · The creators behind the category
The creators behind the category
Of the 1,419 creators who posted about a protein coffee and shake brand in the top creator pools, 1,067 (75.2%) posted once in the window and 123 (8.7%) posted three or more times about the same brand (29 December 2025 to 28 June 2026).
149 creators (10.5%) tagged two or more brands in the window. That shared bench is where a brand finds creators who already film this category: heathergets_healthy tagged eight brands, takingmylifebackat42 six.
The bench is small by follower count. Creators with 10k to 100k followers were 42.0% of all posting creators and made 42.3% of the posts; creators under 10k were 35.4% and made 34.7%; creators with 100k to 500k were 17.5%. Accounts over 500k were 5.1% of creators between them, so the category's reach is built by many small accounts, not a few large ones.
The top creators by views are led by single viral posts rather than programmes: the biggest, 12,714,042 views, is a laptop review that tags Legion's account and is not category content; the next is a 7,008,662-view day in the life tagged to Garden of Life.
What to do with itStart with the shared bench and the two lists below; they are creators the category has already proven, and most have posted about a brand only once, so they are open to a second.
149 creators (10.5%) tagged two or more Protein Coffee & Shake brands in the window; these are the 25 most active.Sup, measured 29 December 2025 to 28 June 2026.

07 · What the category is running
What the category is running
Strategies are inferred from posting patterns, captions and ads; see the methodology page for how each one is detected.
8 of 97 protein coffee and shake brands showed signs of Earned Organic Mentions and 8 showed signs of UGC for Brand Feed between 29 December 2025 and 28 June 2026; 24 brands (24.7%) showed at least one strategy we can detect.
Six brands showed signs of Always-On Creator Retainers, led by Alani Nu with 16 creators posting three or more times each across five months. Six showed signs of Press & Brand Trips, again led by Alani Nu, which had 37 unique creators tag it inside a seven-day window starting on 19 June 2026.
Four brands ran a Long-Term Brand Ambassador, three UGC for Paid Ads, and three an Affiliate / Commission Programme (Protein Works had 14 creator captions with codes or links). Six brands ran three strategies at once: Clean Simple Eats, Alani Nu, Myprotein, Protein Works, Ghost and Legion.
What to do with itMost brands here run nothing we can see; a single always-on retainer group, which six brands already run, would put a new entrant in the top quarter of the category on visible strategy.
24 of 97 Protein Coffee & Shake brands showed at least one detectable strategy; Earned Organic Mentions was the most common with 8 brands.Sup, measured 29 December 2025 to 28 June 2026.

54 of 97 protein coffee and shake brands (55.7%) were running Meta ads at the end of the window, 4,511 live ads in total, and 40.3% of those ads had run for more than 60 days.
3,477 of the live ads were older than 30 days, 1,818 older than 60 and 991 older than 90; the median advertiser's ads had run for 23.2 days. Video made up 51.8% of live ads, carousels 26.0% and images 22.2%.
The creative style is far more polished than the creator posts: cinematic creatives were 25.9% of live ads by weight, polished brand 17.7%, and creator-style UGC only 11.5%. Five of the 18 advertisers with enough classified creatives run mostly UGC.
Among the 100 longest-running creatives, 66 were still live after 60 days. Carousels over-index among the survivors (index 1.15 on 33 creatives) and low-effort creatives too (1.11 on 37); polished brand creatives under-index (0.67 on 18). Javvy ran the most live ads, 511, then RYZE with 483 and Humantra with 465; Protein Works kept 205 of its 230 ads past 60 days.
Advertisers whose creatives are mostly UGC (five brands) drew a median of 230,193 creator views; advertisers with mostly polished creatives (13 brands) drew 244,703; brands with no live ads (43) drew 16,796. That is an association between advertising and creator attention, not a cause.
What to do with itThe category's ads do not yet look like its creator posts; a brand that runs creator-style video in Meta while the others run cinematic cuts is testing something 89% of advertisers here are not.

09 · Brand feeds versus creator posts
Brand feeds versus creator posts
On TikTok, the protein coffee and shake brands' own top posts drew a median of 271,850 views against 21,300 for the top creator posts, 12.8 times as many (29 December 2025 to 28 June 2026).
That reversal belongs to a few brands. Premier Protein's own recipe videos drew 67,700,000, 64,900,000 and 51,700,000 views, and Perfect Bar's 27,100,000; the brand-own TikTok feed in this category is a recipe channel that creators are not matching.
On Instagram the picture flips. The brands' own top posts earned a median of 610 likes and comments against 1,176 for the top creator posts, 1.9 times as many for the creators; Instagram brand images carry no view count, so views cannot be compared there.
The brand feeds are 29.8% promotional and 19.9% relatable content; carousels are 18.0% of the top brand posts, skits 16.2% and talking heads 14.3%. 32.7% of the brand posts carry a paid partnership label. Alani Nu placed 30 posts in the top 100 brand feed posts and Clean Simple Eats 29.
What to do with itOn TikTok, copy what the brand feeds already prove: fast recipe videos with the product as the ingredient. On Instagram, creators out-engage the brands, so put the budget there.

Creators with under 100k followers made 77.0% of the category's posts and small accounts hold the engagement edge, 2.05% on TikTok against 0.12% for accounts with 100k to 500k followers.See the table

Set the scale trigger at the top 1% for the tier, and copy what passes it.

What we would test first
We would test the recipe pattern first, with eight to ten creators under 100k followers on Instagram and a handful of accounts under 10k on TikTok, each briefed to say "let's make" the drink in the first second and pour it somewhere real: a car, a kitchen, a gas station. The bar is the top 10% for the tier, 27,334 views on Instagram; anything past 455,276 gets cloned across the group the following week.
Three things in this data surprised us. First, the category's own feeds beat its creators on TikTok, and by a distance: Premier Protein's recipe videos drew tens of millions of views each while the median top creator post drew 21,300. The brands have found the format; most creators have not. Second, the ads and the creator posts belong to different worlds. 92.8% of the top creator posts are creator-filmed, yet cinematic creatives make up 25.9% of live ad weight, polished brand 17.7%, and UGC 11.5%. The category is paying for a look its audience does not choose. Third, attention is concentrated and empty at the same time: ten brands take 71.7% of creator views, 15 brands have no creator post at all, and only 24 show a strategy we can detect. There is room in this category for a brand that briefs small creators on a recipe and keeps at it.
