1. Carnitas Uruapan
Cooking up a storm since 1975, the team of Carnitas Uruapan have brought a little slice of Mexico to Chicago. Try the Tacos Dorados, which come with a choice of fillings from potato and chorizo to pork brain and jalapeno. If you’re a meathead their pork carnitas is a must, the meat is slow-cooked until crisp and golden brown – yum.

2. Don Pedro Carnita
Don Pedro is a pillar of the community and an example of the hard work and perseverance of Chicago’s Latin residents. They opened their doors in 1981 and have been churning out the good stuff ever since. Try the Taco de Carnita (braised pork) or the Guisado de Carne de Puerco ( pork stew).

3. Cantón Regio Steakhouse
Specializing in Northern Mexican cuisine, this steak house is a tasty addition to your hitlist. As you might have guessed from the name, they do a good steak but you can also munch on grilled squid and chicken dishes, all prepared using the salsas, spices and marinades common in the North. It’s a popular place to grab a bite so expect to wait in line at peak periods.

4. Rabanitos Restaurante and Taqueri
One block from the National Museum of Mexican Art, this restaurant is a must for those wanting an authentic taste of Mexican cuisine. Try the selection of tacos with a choice of fillings including the beef barbacoa or pibil (pulled pork shoulder). There’s also a dedicated vegetarian menu.

5. La Vaca Margarita Bar
If it’s Saturday night, and you want to get jiggy well into the early hours, this is the spot to consume your first several units of alcohol. La Vaca is well known for their heady pitchers of margarita that can be washed down with their box of twelve tacos or one of their freshly prepared enchiladas. A great spot to come with friends before hitting the town.

6. La Mejikana
The team aim to add a modern twist to the traditional Mexican cooking and hope that their guests experience ‘Taco Bliss’. The menu includes all the culinary hits from taquitos to empanadas and has a good cocktail list to get your appetite fired up. There’s also a heated patio for alfresco dining, whatever the weather.
